The U.S. rental market has never been more challenging to our nation’s under-employed and entry level (i.e., young) apartment dwellers. Prime area codes in major cities like Brooklyn and San Francisco (including their neighboring cities) are fetching enormous prices and privacy is completely off the table: unless you’re earning a six figure income, say hello to your new roommate.

On the other hand, cities in the middle of the country — like Birmingham, Alabama, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Asheville, North Carolina — are offering significantly more for your dollar. $1000 gets you so much more than any single person under the age of 25 could need in terms of space, interior design aesthetics, and overall cost of living. What these places lack in employment opportunities they more than make up for in quality of life.
